At the membership meeting on September 20, Susan Garfinkel, Executive Board Member-at-Large for Publications, unveiled the Guild’s new website to an appreciative audience in LM 139. With a brand new look, enhanced functionality, and a fresh approach to providing resources and timely information, the new website combines an appreciation of the Guild’s forty-two year history with a forward-looking emphasis on the future of work at the Library of Congress.
The culmination of months of planning and effort, the new Guild website at www.guild2910.org provides a streamlined information architecture and includes expanded sections on: Joining the Guild; Advocacy; Resources—including full text of our Contract and Constitution as well as links to labor initiatives across the country; Guild and library labor history, and a full archive of earlier website content.
This new effort completely revamped the older website, “which in form, dated back to the basic HTML coding of the 1990s,” according to Susan. The new site is built on WordPress software, a popular CMS (content management system) that allows multiple authors and editors to easily collaborate on updating content. It also has a fresh visual design. “This new website is one that we can proud of, one that we can build upon,” Susan added.
The Guild’s website is envisioned as a portal for information about our union that will provide members with an ongoing view of what we do to improve working conditions at the Library. News and updates on topics of interest will feature prominently. Members are encouraged to submit ideas about what they would like to see on the Guild website to guild@loc.gov.
