Mission of the Guild

A Modern and Progressive Library of Congress

Adopted by the Guild Executive Board on July 29, 2002

WHEREAS, the mission of the Library of Congress is to make its resources available and useful to the Congress and the American people and to sustain and preserve a universal collection of knowledge and creativity for future generations; and

WHEREAS, in order for the Library to prosper it must establish a modern and progressive work environment where employees can continually develop their skills so that they may maintain a high quality of public service and performance; and,

WHEREAS, the over 1500 professionals who work at the Library want to participate in the formulation and implementation of policies and practices which affect the conditions of their employment, the enhancement of their careers and the well-being of their families and loved ones; and,

WHEREAS, on April 16, 2002 the Library and the Guild signed a three-year Collective Bargaining Agreement which implements Expanded Hours of Work to 8:00 p.m., a Maxiflex Schedule (the 4-day work week), a TeleWork Pilot Program, a Volunteer Leave Bank Pilot Program, Expanded Credit Hours and Expanded Leave Benefits for Family Care; and,

WHEREAS, since 1976, the Guild has been an advocate for change at the Library insisting that employees be treated with fairness, equity and respect and that the quality of their work lives be continuously improved; and,

WHEREAS, the Guild has been successful because of the support of its members who pay dues, attend meetings, and participate in the affairs of the organization; therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED, That the Guild Executive Board encourages every Library of Congress professional staff member to join the Guild and invite your colleagues to become members.

Together we can build a better Library of Congress and a better world.
