We are shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the death of Andrew Washington, Executive Director of our council, AFSCME Council 20 for the District of Columbia and Virginia, due to COVID-19.
Brother Andrew Washington was a singular leader in the local labor movement who impacted the lives of countless people, municipal and federal sector alike. Our AFSCME family has lost a vibrant, dedicated, and irreplaceable ally who was fighting for all of us. He was a vibrant light in our community who helped and inspired many, and he is already sorely missed.
Just last month, Brother Andrew joined us on a Zoom call for a swearing-in of Guild officers and stewards, where he had many encouraging words for our union. He was realistic about the coming challenges of 2021, and was a true trade unionist who knew the strength of solidarity and action. We did not expect to be moving forward without him.
Our condolences and love to his family, and to the many others whose lives he touched.
